Working
Area
Since 1989, MSS is operating in tribal dominated regions of Udaipur
district of southern Rajasthan, India. It is working in 9 Gram Panchayats;
Kolyari, Jetawara, Oda, Thobawara, Gejvi, Birothi, Nevaj, Anjroli Khas, Panarva
of Jhadol block, covering 60 villages and 5 villages of Gram Panchayats Khakria,
Dungria of Kotra block.
Lately, intervention has been expanded to 20 villages of Sagwara Block of
Dungarpur district and 20 villages of Garhi Panchayat Samiti of Banswara
district. Through its interventions it affected life of approximately 42,000
people of 6000 families of interior villages, where outreach of development
facilities has been minimal.
Socio economic profile of the area:
Main occupation of the families is based on agriculture and that too is depended
on the rain fed farming, average land holding is small (less than 2.5 acres)
and fragmented with very limited irrigation facilities. The area has been
suffering form recurring drought situation and the farmers face tough time
when the monsoon fails. They often have to take cash or kind loan from the
local moneylenders who trap them in their heavy rate of interest. Especially
women's suffer from dangers of ignorance in health aspects. Children's do
not taking proper immunization; growth rate of children is very low. Maximum
children's are under weight and mal nourished.
Migration has become inevitable phenomenon in the last decade and almost
every farmer have to go out of the village in search of work for 6-8 months.
They generally go to Amet, Kelwa and Udaipur mines for bread and butter.
The worst hit of the migration are the children who are devoid of any education.
Drop out becomes inevitable and they have to search for their own bread and
butter. The tribal families also visualize the children as their economic
asset and do not want them to study. Often children are involved in the child
Labour in the cities in the hotels. |
